Crayon - Taiwan
Education: Bachelor of Journalism at Carleton University, BEd (P/J) at Queen's University
Year Teaching: 2
Subject and Grade: Middle kindergarten “Jungban” (children ages 4-5)
My travel experience: France, Belgium, Bahamas, Netherlands, U.S., U.K.
I decided to teach in Taiwan because I became restless back home and needed to shove myself out of my comfort zone.
My biggest fear about moving abroad was driving a scooter in Taiwan and entrusting the care of my cats to other people.
This year, I am most excited about enjoying my second year of teaching! I learned so much during my first year in Taiwan, I am so excited to apply what I learned. I am also thrilled to have a new class of wonderful students.
5 must have items I packed in my suitcase:
1. Cash. Lots of it. Living in Taiwan is very cheap, but credit cards are essentially useless here because so few places accept them.
2. Good shoes for hiking the incredible mountains
4. Favourite movies for typhoon days
5. Journals so I can document everything
Famous, must-eat delicacies from Taiwan: bubble tea, stinky tofu, blood cake (duck or pig blood), beef noodle soup, pineapple cake, radish cake, mango shaved ice
Most excited to explore the entire country as much as possible. While I do want to visit nearby Asian countries, Taiwan is an amazing island and I want to see as much of it as I can.
One word to sum up your first year teaching: Development
Favourite Memory from First Year Teaching: Reading with my students and seeing their improvement throughout the year. Also, eating as much mango as I possibly can.
Professional Goal This Year: Take what I learned last year to improve my teaching ability and continue to learn and grow all year long.
