Bedazzled in the Bahamas

Every January, primary schools, middle schools and high schools from all over Eleuthera come together to compete in Junior Junkanoo. Junkanoo is a street parade that employs music, dance and pasted cardboard costumes to depict a unified theme. The festival originated in the 18th Century at Christmas time, when African slaves had several days off to celebrate through song, dance and colourful costumes.

The costumes are intricately constructed, pasted and "tricked" out or bedazzled, and each one that you see in these photos takes about 5-7 hours to complete. Deep Creek Middle School's theme this year was "Save Our Seas," where we combined reusable plastics with traditional Junkanoo materials to raise awareness of pollution and overfishing in Bahamian waters. The kids were unbelievable--their energy and enthusiasm was absolutely contagious!
