Magic Marker - Trinidad

Education:  Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Education (Queen’s University)

Year Teaching: 2

Subject and Grade: Music. 1-12

My travel experience: England, France and The Netherlands - nothing outside of Europe

I decided to teach in Trinidad and Tobago because I want to gain new experiences abroad that will make me a more rounded teacher. The vibrant culture in Trinidad was a real draw for me and the music is so exciting! The only family of acoustic instruments, the steel pan, to be developed in the 20th century comes from Trinidad, and I am lucky enough to teach it!

My biggest fear about moving abroad was being so far from friends and family as well as leaving my cat behind.

This year, I am most excited about teaching new courses in French and Cooking as well as integrating more social media into my classes (Hashtag in french is “mot-clique”...the more you know).

5 must have items I packed in my suitcase:
1. SUNSCREEN!
2. Ukulele
3. My hair straightner to battle the caribbean humidity
4. Percussion posters for my classroom
5. Love Actually on DVD to watch on December 1st.

Famous, must-eat delicacies from Trinidad: Shark and Bake (fried shark served with pepper sauce) Roti, Goat curry.

Most excited to explore the national parks in Trinidad to see birds. Trinidad has the most diverse population of birds in the world.

One word to sum up your first year teaching: Whirlwind

Favourite Memory from First Year Teaching: Giving my junior cooking club a “Chopped” style challenge. The amount of imagination and creativity that they put into their dishes was amazing and the pride that they felt was inspiring.

Professional Goal This Year: Organize my class binders as I go along to demonstrate proper organization for my students.
