Sharpener - Dubai
Education: Concurrent Education Program at Queen’s
Year Teaching: One!
Subject and Grade: Grade 1 Homeroom teacher
My travel experience: Grew up in Canada, Germany and Belgium and traveled to France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Greece, Italy, UK and Ireland
I decided to teach in Dubai because: It felt right. Leading up to TORF, I had my heart set on moving to Central or South America, but ended up turning down all of those offers for Dubai. I really clicked with the recruiter and felt like the school was a good fit.
My biggest fear about moving abroad is: Getting arrested or jailed for something I don’t know is illegal.
This year, I am most excited about: Discovering a part of the world I have never seen and having a fulfilling year with my grade ones!
5 must have items I packed in my suitcase:
1. Comfortable shoes
2. Photos and memories from home
3. Light clothes that can easily be layered
4. 3 pairs of Sunglasses
5. A journal to write about my teaching and travels
Famous, must-eat delicacies from Dubai: Stuffed camel (haven’t tried it yet!), Shawarma. Al Harees (wheat, meat and salt cooked over a long period of time)
Most excited to explore: a desert safari, the souks, the malls...there is so much to do here!
Professional Goal This Year: Getting all my kids where they need to be in order to be successful in grade 2
